There will be times in everybody’s life when they end up either hospitalized or in some type of Recovery Center. That can be because of injury, disease, life-threatening illness or addiction or alcoholism. During this time, someone may not be able to practice their normal hygiene habits.
You may be preparing for surgery or coming out of surgery, dealing with medicines and/or illness. During this time, it’s so important to maintain your oral health for the protection and recovery of the rest of your body.
It will be important to reach out to the nursing staff, and let them know of any issues you have had with your oral health. If you have had gum disease, gingivitis, or periodontitis. That lets the staff know to be on the alert. Being in good health, you may eat and drink on your own. Have the nurse provide daily flosses and brushing after a meal followed up by a fluoride mouthwash that will help you stay bacteria-free. Depending on the reason for hospitalization, it will be of utmost importance to keep your immune system safe.
When you are hospitalized, it’s a stressful environment. Your body is on high alert, and the immune system can suffer from it. Poor oral health can lead to bodily illness quickly. Gum disease, gingivitis, and periodontitis are linked to causing pneumonia, stroke, and heart disease. By flossing, brushing, and using mouthwash each day, you protect your body from fighting off another issue. While in the hospital, you want to limit your body’s stress and protect it from any other problems.
